Alex from Velo Cult bike shop was nice enough to help me build up part of the 725 (as well as show me how to put alot of it together), and Dan Arel from Leader mounted the headset this morning over at the Leader warehouse. While I was over there I snagged a few pictures:

    new bikes/my apartment

Leader Bikes was nice enough to setup me up with one of their 725tr frames and slew of parts for it after my last trip up to SF/Seattle. Our apartment is always a flood of bikes now a days, we really need to get something setup to hang them on the walls.

I head to Phoenix on Friday for a while, and next month is Portland from the 8th to the 12th.

    Careers for Bio/Soc Ideas?
Hi all, I was wondering if you had any career ideas for me. I got a dual degree in Sociology and Biology, Molecular and Cellular. Now I've graduated, and I'm trying to figure out the best route to go with it. Any advice? Thanks.

Where did page 13 go? To be honest, I skipped a day in my journal during my trip and I haven’t finished drawing it yet. I wanted to get a page up today so I decided to move along to the pages that are finished. I’ll let you know when page 13 is up!

    Homework help -- sorry!
Hi, everyone. I was just wondering if you could look over these sentences that I had to write for my (high school) Italian class and offer any corrections. I hope this is okay! My teacher gave us a couple of stipulations for each sentence but he let us write whatever we wanted; they're not translations of anything.

Adopted From Korea and in Search of Identity

Adopted From Korea and in Search of Identity
    By RON NIXON

As a child, Kim Eun Mi Young hated being different.

When her father brought home toys, a record and a picture book on South Korea, the country from which she was adopted in 1961, she ignored them.

Growing up in Georgia, Kansas and Hawaii, in a military family, she would date only white teenagers, even when Asian boys were around.

“At no time did I consider myself anything other than white,” said Ms. Young, 48, who lives in San Antonio. “I had no sense of any identity as a Korean woman. Dating an Asian man would have forced me to accept who I was.”

It was not until she was in her 30s that she began to explore her Korean heritage. One night, after going out to celebrate with her husband at the time, she says she broke down and began crying uncontrollably.

“I remember sitting there thinking, where is my mother? Why did she leave me? Why couldn’t she struggle to keep me?” she said. “That was the beginning of my journey to find out who I am.”

    Xposted...sorry

First, we're renting. Since we don't own this place so I can't do major renovations or anything.

There are these...vents around the trailer. There are 4 of them total. Each of are dug out and has a metal boarder around it and they each have a board standing up in them. (see pics)

    1) What are they for?

    2) It's COLD!! Can I put a piece of insulation down there to keep cold air from coming up under the house or is that going to cause a problem with ventilation?

This is a peculiar question, I know, but it's something I've got a sudden curiosity about.

Are there any particularly brilliant phrases or words in your dialect that you think are region specific to the extent that would probably make no sense to no-one outside your own area (language permitting, I mean)?

The reason I ask is, my Nanna finally explained to me the meaning of a phrase that I've heard all my life here in Grimsby, England, but that I never questioned:
"Eggin' ba o' Doigs" [Egging at the back of Doigs']
Used to evade a question, particularly if you think someone is being nosey. For example:
Person A: Where are we going? / Where were you last night?
Person B: Eggin' back o' Doigs'
I've only ever heard this once or twice, but it can also be used to describe something that is futile:
Person A: I tried to get ma lass out o' bed fo' school this mornin', it were like eggin' ba o' Doigs'...

Back when my Mum was a kid (early 50s) and most people were hard up in the town, people would steal birds' eggs out of trees ['egging'] (back when this was still legal and not morally questioned). Doigs' was a shipyard in an industrial estate, so obviously bereft of wildlife, and therefore it wasn't possible to go egging at the back of Doigs', because there weren't any trees. It's giving an answer without giving an answer, and essentially a way of saying "mind your own business!". It used to do my head in when I was little because my Mum would say it to me all the time and I'd never heard of egging (outside of the modern term of throwing eggs at buildings as vandalism), or of this shipyard (as far as I know it no longer exists). To make matters worse, she would evade my question about evading the question by evading the question...
    Me: Where are we going?
    Mum: Eggin back o Doig's.
    Me: Where?!
    Mum: Eggin back o Doig's!
Now that I understand it though I think it's ace, and inventive on the part of whoever made it up!

I can think of other similar phrases and words in Grimsby's dialect too that would fly over peoples' heads without an explanation like the above, and wondered if other towns, cities, states, whatever, had their own :) I'm aware from having an ex with a very VERY strong Black Country dialect that they have a ton in that dialect. I'm kind of fascinated!

    modifying a recipe
i need help from some of you more experienced chefs.

i want to make shrimp scampi for dinner, but i've over estimated the amount of shrimp i have (i have about half of what i need). would it be win to add some bacon too? i've had a really good pasta dish before that had bacon and shrimp in it but i don't know if the other ingredients would make the flavors clash too much... if i were to add bacon is there anything i should omit or cut down on?

i also have some sun-dried tomatoes i may add.

here's the recipe in question for the linkaphobes:

    * 1 (8 ounce) package angel hair pasta
    * 1/2 cup butter
    * 4 cloves minced garlic
    * 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
    * 1 cup dry white wine
    * 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
    * 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
    * 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

    Directions

    1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Stir in pasta and return pot to boil. Cook until al dente. Drain well.
    2. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in garlic and shrimp. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 to 5 minutes.
    3. Stir in wine and pepper. Bring to a boil and cook for 30 seconds while stirring constantly.
    4. Mix shrimp with drained pasta in a serving bowl. Sprinkle with cheese and parsley. Serve immediately.

    thanks in advance!!! :)

    Poetry translation theory wanted
    Hi, linguaphilians!

I'm about to write my course paper on problems of English poetry translation. The practical part of the paper will be a translation of Dylan Thomas's verse into Ukrainian, and comments on it. But I have no idea, what references should I use for the theoretical part of the work.

    So the questions are:

    1. Could you kindly advise some books in English, where the problem of rendering English poetry into various languages is discussed? Poetry translation theory, rendering stylistic devices etc.

    2. Could you advise one or two books of critical essays about Thomas's poetry, maybe a stylistic analysis of his poetic devices and language in general? There are hundreds of books, but I'm looking for really useful ones.

    Thanks!

    grrr so I've been diagnosed
    with Meneire's disease
    it's not so great
but not really as bad as its name
the first meds the doc recommended
have not worked in the least
    the next drug to try
will preclude me from breastfeeding any further
I don't yet know how I feel about this
    I'm not way into breastfeeding
since I mde it to 1yr and all
but the beebees doc did suggest I do it
    through the winter
due to all the upcoming bad flu issues
and I'd like to do that
    can I deal with this
    for the next 5mo
    without solving the puzzle?
    things to think about
I've not yet been to an ENT guy
so that might be the next step
if I'd like to avoid this drug

    in other news
    cheerier news
I ordered 2 more books today
    I'm pretty excited about them
    vegetarian indian cook book
and how to draft patterns for clothes
    from measurements
I think I've got the basics down already
but this book got grrreat reviews
and I'd like to really know how to do it right
I'd like to clear out my inventory
of clothes and slowly work toward
    more hand made custom fitted
so if I gain or lose weight I'll know it
and everything will fit so nice!

    I've also decided 2 things
since I'm going to have to deal
    with this Meniere's thing
I'm going to have to buckle down
    with naps and exercise
to cut down on my potential stress
for naps my plan is to feed the boys
    lunch when they start fussing
    around 11-12ish
finish it off with 3oz bottles of warm milk
    and lay them down
if they decide to cry it out so be it
and in the morning before 11
I plan to exercise for at least 20min
    by dancing and jumping around
    in the living room
    I don't really have a better choice
    for exercise right now
    in line with exercise goals
    I have also decided
that if I can get myself down to 133
and stay within 2lbs of that for a month
I will buy myself some vibram 5finger shoes
    in the lavender
    hot!
    I've got a tattoo client
who's checking them out right now
    and I won't buy unless he's convinced
    that they rock
    but currently that's my vote
    for next shoe purchase

    in the world of toys
    I failed miserably
    to design a 4 legged, 3 armed, 2 headed
    conjoined twin for my circus
    damn
well back to the more simple approach
which I think really gives me more freedom
    as I go

    off to forrage for lunch!

    Strange request
I know this sounds like spam, but there is a reason why I'm asking, i promise.

How old is an old woman? i.e. if you saw the phrase "old woman" used to describe someone in a story, what age would you assume that person was?

I'm trying to comment on a translation of some Norwegian childrens stories, and I think they might have aged the main character, but I need the opinion of native speakers in order to really say anything about it :)

    Thank you

getting gasoline smell out of a feather bed
I have a king-sized feather bed that got a small gasoline spill on it while it was being transported in my car. The spot is an oval that is perhaps 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall. I don't think that gas really soaked through the cover into the feathers. However, the smell is pretty strong. Any tips for something I can buy or a household product I could use to lift out the smell? I haven't tried anything yet because I didn't want to make it worse. I'm trying to avoid needing to dry-clean it because that will likely cost more than the feather bed did in the first place ;)  Thanks in advance for any tips.
