It's NOT over yet

Before you go running for the champagne, realize that Governor Mitt Romeny is NOT HAPPY with this, nor are the other legistators of the state government.

From Yahoo news:

Gov. Mitt Romney disagreed with the decision saying that marriage should be an institution between just one man and one woman. He said that he is going to do all he can to stop marriage licenses from going out to non-traditional couples.

Romney said that he will support an amendment to the Massachusetts Constitution that will limit marriage to a man and a woman.

"Marriage is a relationship between a man and a women. The exact equivalent to marriage is also reserved to a man and a woman. Over the next several months, I will work with Legislative leadership and other legislators and community leaders to decide what kind of statute we can fashion, which is consistent with the law. We obviously have to follow the law as provided by the SJC Even if we don't agree with it, we are going to follow it in terms of preparing legislation. We will initiate a Constitution amendment process that will be consistent with what I think the feelings are of the people of the commonwealth," Romney said.

From me: Let me tell you, you have got to send them mail or phone calls. This isn't just for the state of MA, but for the gay community in the whole country. It's time Mitt Romney and all the rest to keep their religious beliefs out of their political decisions! I can tell you right now that the Political Right will be making a lot of noise during this window of time. We have to keep up with them.

I'm damn happy about the courts decision and you can be sure Mit and everybody else who tries to undo it is going to hear from me! Thanks for the info!

He will support the ammendment, but the entire state pretty much agrees with today's decision. 60% of catholics in massachusetts think there's no problem with gay marriage. From what I've heard the ammendment couldn't be voted on until late 2006, and I think (hope?) that by that point it won't have a chance.

The process including the constitutional convention, public vote, etc. takes at very least two years, so yeah, it's end of 2003 now, it'll be a while before they can change it. Plus, what do they do with all of the people who have married in the meantime legally? This ruling is looking pretty good as far as sticking.

They say the day of yurga can only be realized once it has passed. I think that this is such a point of re-defining things in the country.

Oddly enough, you and Katie are my only friends who've posted about this.

That's because some of us don't feel obligated to re-post things that other people on our friends list already posted about. ;-)

Also, not living in Massachusetts anymore, I'm kind of out of the Massachusetts political loop...although front page on the New York Times was fairly difficult to miss.

Congratulations, Massachusetts. I miss you guys!

P.S. Who knew that Cheney's daughter is a lesbian?

I kid you not. Google it. She's still extremely conservative in every other way.

I'm sure it wasn't great, but that probably all depends on when she came out. She's like 31 right now.

Maybe she just didn't look at guys. Some closeted gay people live rather comfortably with themselves until after they move out of their parents' house.

Well that hardly means anything. All republicans go to hell. It's just the way things work. ;-)
